Why anamorphic lenses make video look so cinematic
Wide frames, stretched flares and soft oval highlights. Here's what anamorphic lenses actually do, and when they're the right choice for your project.
You've probably felt it even if you couldn't name it: some footage just looks like a movie. Very often, that feeling comes from anamorphic lenses. They're a big part of what makes cinema look like cinema, and they're one of the tools we use when a project calls for that look, as in our film Tokyo in Anamorphic.
What “anamorphic” actually means
An anamorphic lens squeezes a wider image horizontally onto the camera sensor. In the edit, the image is “de-squeezed” back out, which gives you a wider frame than a normal lens could capture on the same sensor. It was originally invented so films could fit widescreen images onto standard film stock.
The signature look
That squeeze-and-stretch process changes how the image looks in a few distinctive ways:
- Wide aspect ratio. The classic letterboxed cinema frame.
- Oval bokeh. Out-of-focus lights become soft vertical ovals instead of circles.
- Horizontal flares. Bright lights streak across the frame, often in a blue or amber line.
- A different depth. Backgrounds fall off in a way that feels more dimensional and filmic.
When anamorphic is the right choice
Anamorphic is perfect for projects where mood matters more than information: brand films, travel and city pieces, fashion, music and atmospheric event films. Night scenes with practical lights, like city streets, festival stages and neon, are where the flares and bokeh really shine.
When it isn't
It's not always the answer. Anamorphic lenses are heavier, slower to work with and usually more expensive. For fast, run-and-gun coverage, or content that's mostly viewed vertically on phones, a standard lens is often the smarter choice. The wide frame also needs planning if you'll be cropping to 9:16 for social.
The takeaway
Lens choice is a creative decision, not just a technical one. If you're planning a brand film and love that “movie” feeling, mention it in your brief. It changes how the whole shoot is planned.
