8 questions to ask before hiring a videographer
Before you book anyone, ask these eight questions. They'll tell you whether a videographer is the right fit, and save you from surprises later.
Choosing a videographer is part creative decision, part logistics. A great showreel is a good start, but the questions below are what tell you how the project will actually run. We've included how we handle each one, so you can see what good answers look like.
1. Have you filmed something like this before?
Festivals, corporate events, product launches and restaurants all need different skills. Ask to see work that's close to your project. Our portfolio is split into festivals and events, and brands and commercials, for exactly this reason.
2. Do you handle filming and editing?
Some people only shoot, and some only edit. Ideally one team handles the whole process, from pre-production (storyboarding, concept and messaging) through the shoot to post-production. That's how we work, on high-scale productions and smaller projects alike.
3. What exactly will I receive?
Get the deliverables in writing: how many videos, how long, which formats (widescreen, vertical, square) and whether photos or raw footage are included.
4. How long will it take?
Agree on dates before production starts. As a reference, we deliver a 60-second highlight reel within 48 hours of an event, and a full-length documentary typically takes three to six weeks including review rounds.
5. How do revisions work?
Ask how many feedback rounds are included and how changes are requested. Clear revision rounds keep the project on schedule.
6. Who owns the footage?
This one is often missed. With us, full usage rights transfer to you on final payment. We keep portfolio rights unless you request confidentiality, and it's all outlined in the project agreement up front.
7. Do you travel, and how are travel costs handled?
We're based in Australia, Thailand and Singapore, and work across Australia, Southeast Asia and internationally. For single-day shoots, the client covers transport. For multi-day shoots, accommodation is needed as well. All of it is outlined during scoping.
8. How do quotes and bookings work?
Every project is different, so pricing should be based on your vision, the size of the shoot, the turnaround and the deliverables. We send a custom quote, and a 50% deposit secures the booking date.
